Justin Timberlake is hard at work on new songs and he says that so far, the material seems pretty direct. “I wouldn’t say [my new material] is the antithesis of 20/20, but it does sound more singular,” he said. “If 20/20 sounded like it literally surrounds your entire head, this stuff feels more like it just punches you between the eyes.”

The pop star recently released a few songs for the Trolls soundtrack, but hasn’t released a full album since 2013’s The 20/20 Experience. Timberlake said there is no firm release date for the new project. “I’ll put it out when it’s done – when it feels right,” reports Rolling Stone.

Timberlake is working with Pharrell Williams for the first time since his Justified album. The producer revealed that they had “a good solid six [songs] that are like, ‘Whoa, what was that? Play that again.'”

As for working with the former *NSYNC frontman, Williams told Rolling Stone, “If you’re able to really screenshot your own vulnerability, and frame it properly, and color-correct it, then it becomes something that every human can relate to. And I think Justin is in the place where he’s mastering that right now.”

Timberlake also teamed up with Timbaland again, as well as Max Martin, who he’d worked with in *NSYNC, and more recently on “Can’t Stop the Feeling.”

Timberlake summed up the team saying, “Tim is a sound junkie, the same way Pharrell is a song junkie. And then Max is like music’s Morpheus.”

Her return to the MTV VMAs was overshadowed by the decision to mime her way through an otherwise spirited rendition of new single Make Me… on Sunday evening.

But despite suffering an online backlash, Britney Spears looked nonplussed as she stepped out for refreshments in New York City on Monday afternoon.

The singer, 34, showed off her increasingly lithe physique in a thigh–skimming semi-sheer dress while purchasing an ice-cream cone from a local vendor.

Here she comes: Britney Spears showed off her increasingly lithe physique in a thigh–skimming semi-sheer dress while purchasing an ice-cream cone from a local vendor in New York City

Britney kept her blonde hair tied in a loose top-knot, while tinted sunglasses partially obscured her famous features as she idled on the sidewalk with a female pal.

The singer was stepping out following an appearance at Music Choice Studios – where she was asked about her very first MTV VMAs performance in 1999.

‘I think I was with *NSYNC when I performed for the first time,’ she said. ‘I think the whole setup was a classroom, and my four main dancers were in the front at their desk and I came out of my locker.

‘But, you know what, I don’t remember at all. I have no recollection. I couldn’t tell you anything about it.’

However a more recent performance at Madison Square Garden was still fresh in the memory, due in part to her miming the lyrics to her new single.

The decision prompted criticism from fans, with one Twitter user writing: ‘lol britney if you’re gonna lip sync you at least have to learn the words.’

Another commented: ‘after all these years you’d think Britney would be a master at lip syncing, guess not.’

But not followers were unimpressed, with one writing: ‘Britney Spears could lip sync the entire Declaration of Independence in a glittery jumpsuit and I’d watch the whole damn thing.’

Decisions, decisions: The singer appeared to ponder the selection of ice-creams before opting for a cone

It was a surprisingly stripped show for bronzed Britney, who kicked off the song in silhouette beneath a large white backdrop.

The Private Show hitmaker sported her signature flaxen hair extensions as she mimed the lyrics of her slow-paced track.

Britney was joined onstage by four female dancers and G-Eazy, who raps on a couple verses of Make Me…
