DeSoto schools set enrollment record

HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - DeSoto County Schools set another enrollment record this year, maintaining its status as Mississippi's largest public school district.

The Commercial Appeal reports (http://bit.ly/UDqmCy ) Superintendent Milton Kuykendall told the five-member school board Monday that the district had 458 more students this year than last.

Enrollment now stands at 32,769 students in K-12 grades. The number could change slightly between now and the last official reporting date of Oct. 10.

Since 1995, the district has nearly doubled in size from 15,907 to 30,000 in 2008. Since 2008, the district has grown by about 1,000 students each year. Last year, there were 32,311 students in the district.
