Board agrees to pay parks project design

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - The Southaven Board of Aldermen has agreed to pay Urban Architects $630,000 to design the proposed senior citizens center and a tennis complex.

In a 6-0 vote at Tuesday's board meeting, officials were greeted with applause from a standing-room-only crowd when they unanimously approved the contract with the Memphis architectural firm.

The Commercial Appeal reports (http://bit.ly/T0qq2Y ) the proposed senior citizen center is currently estimated to cost $7 million, which includes building and infrastructure costs. The proposed tennis complex to be built at the city's current tennis center is estimated to cost $4 million, which includes building and infrastructure costs.

The senior center and tennis complex are two projects that are part of the 2011 1-cent tourism tax on restaurant tabs, dubbed Penny for Your Parks.
