Labor Dept. fines city of Jackson for OT problems

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Department of Labor has fined the city of Jackson $31,750 for violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act uncovered during a recent federal probe.

The Clarion-Ledger reports (http://on.thec-l.com/OCLf42 ) the department began investigating the city in late 2011 after some unidentified officers complained that their superiors were making them work overtime without proper pay.

The penalty comes months after the city, under the Labor Department's direction, offered 255 officers paid time off to make up for their lost pay. Many officers rejected the offer and sued the city for their lost wages.

The Jackson City Council on Tuesday agreed to pay the fine.
