HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - The first inmates have been moved into the new Billy McGee Law Enforcement Complex.
Forrest County Sheriff Billy McGee tells the Hattiesburg American (http://hatne.ws/TuVHLO ) work center and female inmates were the first to transition from the old jail to the new county lockup on Tuesday.
The 114,000-square-foot facility will hold up to 604 inmates, along with the sheriff's office and dispatch center. Dispatchers have been in the new facility for about a month, and sheriff's offices have been there for about two weeks.
The county's current jail in downtown Hattiesburg was meant to house 155 inmates. Issues with overcrowding have plagued the old facility for years.
