Firefighters and the Memphis Bomb Squad cordoned off a 75-foot radius around the East McLemore Avenue fire department and evacuated the area briefly late Wednesday morning after a man brought a live grenade to the fire station.

The fire department is located a block from the famed Stax Museum of American Soul Music and Soulsville USA.

According Memphis fire spokesman Lt. Wayne Cooke, the man was tearing down a house in the southeast Memphis neighborhood Thursday morning and found the grenade. It was embedded into the ground in the 1400 block of Ely, Lt. Cooke said.

The unidentified man brought the live grenade to the fire station and the city's bomb squad was called. A 75-100-foot radius was cordoned off while the bomb squad investigated the device.

After inspection, the grenade was determined to be live. It is now in the possession of the police department and will likely be disposed of.

It is unclear how old or how heavy the grenade is.

Approximately 25 people in the area were evacuated, Lt. Cooke said. Many of the neighborhood residents were not at home at the time of the evacuation, Lt. Cooke added.

There have been no reported injuries.

The nearby Stax Museum was not part of the evacuation.

The incident remains under investigation.
