Memphis Mayor A C Wharton and producer and songwriter David Porter announced a new music mentoring program called the "Consortium Memphis Music Town."

They made the announcement Tuesday at the Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber will be giving the consortium office space.

The group wants to develop the city's young talent, and re-establish a thriving music industry in the Bluff City.

"If I would have known, I would have had somebody to tell me the business at an early age," said Al Kapone, rapper and music artist from Memphis. "There's no telling where I probably would be at this point in my career. It's just that important. I wish I would have had this opportunity then."

Al Kapone is one of several artists who will be volunteering time to be a music mentor.

The group will announce its website and opening date in December.
