The Mayor says he's trying improve the police department, but the head of the Memphis Police Association says the Mayor isn't supporting his police officers.

Memphis Police Association President Mike Williams reacting to the Mayor's announcement he'll be hiring consultants to review department's disciplinary procedures.

Several officers have found themselves in trouble with the law, but Williams says the officers that break the law are facing the consequences.

Mayor A C Wharton and M-P-D Director Toney Armstrong unveiled a plan to review the department at a City Hall news conference Wednesday.

The department is bringing in two retired police commanders and member of the clergy to review its public safety policies and procedures.

The consultants will be paid and they'll report back with their recommendations for the department.

City leaders also announced they'll be taking a closer look at the entire department to see what works and what doesn't.

A Washington, DC based police think tank has already been reviewing the MPD and offering suggestions on what can be changed.

The head of the police officers' union has some concerns about what the recommendations could mean for the department and the city noting that studies don't make the city safer or put more officers on the streets.

Police Association President Mike Williams says there's a battle looming over the police union's contract negotiations. It's likely some of these issues will be brought up.
