New tour coming to Merrehope

MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) - The cottage section of Merrehope, which has been rented out for a number of years, will undergo a restoration.

Betty Lou Jones, president of the Meridian Restoration Foundation, tells WTOK-TV in Meridian (http://bit.ly/WWEVUt) that plans are to have the cottage ready for tours in March. The Greek Revival cottage was built in 1858.

It is 1 of only a handful of structures to survive the burning of Meridian in 1863 by Union Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman.

Over the next 100 years, the house was remodeled extensively and became rental property, a boarding house and apartments.

In 1968, the foundation brought Merrehope. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and became a Mississippi Landmark in 1995.
