There's no law in the state of Mississippi that bans texting and driving for all drivers.

It could change if a new law passes in Jackson.

Some people call the Mississippi Legislature a graveyard for cellphone and texting bills.

Since 2009 almost 30 proposed bills that would make texting and driving or driving while using a cellphone illegal in the state, have died in committee.

Presently, the only law on the books in Mississippi dealing with texting and driving says it is illegal for a student driver or a school bus driver to text and drive.

Other than that, it's scary to think texting and driving is perfectly legal in Mississippi.

Mississippi is one of only 11 states that doesn't have a total ban against texting while driving or using a cellphone while driving.
 
Under the proposed legislation texting while driving would be illegal, as would using your cellphone to place a call unless you used a hands-free device.
 
If you are 18 or under, you wouldn't be allowed to use your cellphone at all while driving.

Period.

No exceptions.

The proposed cellphone and texting law in Mississippi would not penalize drivers that are using their cells to communicate with law enforcement or 9-1-1 operators.
