PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - Crews are tearing down the Brumfield's Building, a fixture in downtown Pascagoula since the 1920s.

Hurricane Isaac damaged its roof, which caused damage to walls. The family corporation that owns it determined the cost would be too high to save the building, which was a bank before it became a premier men's clothing store under the ownership of Joe Brumfield.

The Sun Herald reports (http://bit.ly/URaugu ) the building was the main store for a chain of Brumfield's department stores that stretched along the Coast and thrived in the 1930s, '40s and '50s.

Brumfield's closed in 1992.

Jackson County rented the building from the Brumfield family for almost a decade -- until Hurricane Katrina's surge flooded and closed it. It hadn't been used since.
