MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Seven-hundred-fifty (750) Memphis City School custodian will get keep their jobs but they will have to take a pay cut after the Unified School Board votes to outsource their positions to a private company.

The debate got heated Thursday evening especially when school board member Sara Lewis stormed out in protest claiming she heard about the plan in Las Vegas on the casino floor during a trip in May 2012.

Outsourcing will save the merged school district $11.5 million annually.

Some board members objected complaining the board was cutting costs on the backs of employees who earn the least.

Some board members looked visibly agitated that it took a special meeting and several hours to take a vote.

No decision has been made on which of the two companies will get the $23 million contract.
