Man allegedly fires shots at first responders during standoff
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -
Memphis police tactical units apprehended a man after he allegedly fired shots at police and firefighters who were treating a woman, and then barricaded himself inside the Saints Court Apartments in an apparent domestic dispute.
The 25-year-old man was taken into custody shortly before 11:30 a.m.
The near 90-minute standoff with police, fire and tactical units unfolded in the north Memphis neighborhood near Vollintine and Watkins.
When police crews arrived to assist firefighters and first responders who were treating the unidentified woman at around 10 a.m., shots were fired from inside the apartment building.
Police officers and the tactical team set up a perimeter to secure the first responders, who were under fire, a police official said.
The unidentified man holed himself inside the apartment with the 1-year-old toddler and the 22-year-old woman.
Police and tactical teams quickly evacuated the apartment complex as a precaution.
No police officers, firefighters or first responders were injured during the event, a police officer said.
Before the man surrendered to the tactical team, a female police officer was seen exiting the apartment complex carrying the toddler to a safe distance.
The toddler and man were both unharmed, police said, but it is unclear if the woman was injured.
According to a family member, the unidentified woman had a restraining order against the man who caused the alleged standoff at her apartment with police. The man allegedly went to her apartment and an argument ensued.
The family member and witnesses in the apartment complex told FOX13 News that the woman was beaten by the man before he allegedly fired gunshots at first responders and police.
