Witness: woman held pillow over son's face

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - A Smyrna woman is on trial in Chattanooga in what prosecutors say was an attempt to smother her 4-year-old son.

The prosecutor used medical records and a doctor's testimony on Wednesday in trying to show the boy's health improved after Monica Dawn Hammers no longer had access to him at Erlanger Medical Center.

As testimony began Tuesday, a witness testified she saw the 43-year-old Hammers hold a pillow over the boy's face for a few seconds after he awakened from a nap and whined.

Hammers is charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse.

The boy was at the hospital in May 2011 for court-ordered medical testing and was scheduled to have a broken arm set.

Hammers is free on bond during the trial.
