Memphis Mayor A C Wharton vehemently denies he decided to cut back on the funding for the police department's Blue Crush operations.

An early and nasty flu season that has swept across the country and killed eight in the Mid-South is picking up steam and is shaping up to be one of the worst flue seasons on record.

Fort Smith man pleads guilty to machine gun charge

FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - A Fort Smith man faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to illegal possession of a machine gun.

The Southwest Times Record reports that 24-year-old Ryan Scott Doughty pleaded guilty to the charge Monday and faces sentencing at an as yet undetermined date.

Man pleads not guilty in fatal Fort Smith shooting

FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - A Fort Smith man has pleaded not guilty to a first-degree murder charge in the shooting death of a woman who was a passenger in a van.

The Southwest Times-Record reports that 23-year-old Jonathan Lewis Jackson entered the plea Wednesday in Sebastian County Circuit Court.
