Lady Gaga surprised her fans at the 2025 Grammy Awards with the debut of a brand-new song and music video from her upcoming album, Mayhem. Rather than performing during the main event, she unveiled “Abracadabra” during a surprise appearance in a commercial break. The video kicked off with a dramatic reference to the Grammys as Gaga proclaimed, “The category is dance… or die.”

The energetic track revives the dark pop sound that catapulted Gaga to fame in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Fans on social media quickly expressed their enthusiasm, with one user on X exclaiming, “lady gaga weird again??? REAL POP MUSIC IS BACK,” while another labeled it “the best Lady Gaga single on first listen since G.U.Y.” from 2013’s ARTPOP.

Clues about “Abracadabra” had emerged earlier, but the official title was not revealed until the Grammys. When Gaga announced last week that Mayhem would be released on March 7, observant fans spotted the word “Abracadabra” hidden in the teaser video’s background. Initially, the song and video were not available online immediately after the TV debut, but Gaga assured fans on social media that they would be accessible within minutes. Approximately 20 minutes later, “Abracadabra” was uploaded to YouTube and streaming platforms.

The music video features a dance battle between two contrasting sides of Gaga—light and dark. She and her dancers, primarily in white, transition into a striking crimson theme at pivotal moments, reflecting the lyrics about a “lady in red.” Gaga co-directed the video alongside Parris Goebel and Bethany Vargas, with Goebel also choreographing a large ensemble of 40 dancers. The styling and costumes, crafted by Peri Rosenzweig and Nick Royal, include a stunning upcycled white cape made from vintage wedding dresses.

Despite debuting “Abracadabra” during a commercial break, Gaga still performed during the main show. Earlier that evening, she collaborated with Bruno Mars to sing “California Dreamin’,” paying tribute to Los Angeles in the wake of the devastating wildfires that occurred in early January.
