Taylor Swift is sharing some important advice for the next generation of musicians — stop reading social media comments.
During an interview with The New York Times about songwriting, the “Shake It Off” superstar explained that constantly reading online criticism can become overwhelming for artists trying to grow creatively.
“My favourite thing when I sit down with new artists or songwriters, I’m like, ‘Why are you reading your comments?’” Swift said. “You’re inundating yourself with too much criticism that doesn’t really have a focus.”
The Grammy-winning artist admitted that criticism can sometimes inspire creativity, but she believes artists should avoid letting negativity control their work or confidence.
According to Swift, instead of responding directly to online trolls through social media posts or Notes app statements, artists should channel those emotions into their music.
“If it’s an interesting point to you to kind of respond to, then that’s a gift for you to be able to write something,” she explained. “Make art about this. Don’t respond to trolls in your comments. That’s not what we want from you. We want your art.”
Swift also revealed that criticism has inspired some of her biggest hits throughout her career. She pointed to her 2014 smash hit Blank Space as an example, saying the song would not exist without public scrutiny surrounding her dating life.
She also mentioned her 2022 hit Anti-Hero, explaining that the deeply personal track was influenced by criticism she has faced over the years.
The pop superstar’s comments are resonating with fans and fellow musicians alike as social media pressure continues to grow in the entertainment industry. Swift’s message is clear: focus on creating meaningful art instead of getting distracted by online negativity.
