Tiger Woods Reaches Plea Deal in DUI Case
Tiger Woods’ legal battle stemming from his March car crash in Florida has come to an end with a plea agreement.
The 15-time major champion appeared in a Martin County courtroom Wednesday and accepted a deal that reduced the more serious DUI charge to reckless driving. Woods also pleaded to refusing to submit to a lawful test.
As part of the agreement, Woods will have his driver’s license suspended for five years. He was also ordered to pay roughly $1,500 in fines and costs, according to reports.
Woods Avoids Jail Time
The plea deal means Woods will avoid jail time in connection with the case.
The judge did, however, issue a strong warning. Woods was told that driving during the five-year suspension could result in him being sent to jail.
The original case stemmed from a March 27 rollover crash near Woods’ home on Jupiter Island, Florida. Woods was initially charged with DUI involving property damage and refusing to submit to a lawful test.
Why Was the DUI Charge Reduced?
Prosecutors ultimately faced questions about whether they could prove Woods was impaired.
Authorities found hydrocodone in Woods’ possession following the crash, but a breath test showed no alcohol in his system. Woods’ medical and prescription history also became part of the investigation. Prosecutors ultimately agreed to the reduced charge.
Woods had initially pleaded not guilty to the charges in March.
What’s Next for Tiger Woods?
The legal case is now largely behind Woods, but the five-year driving suspension will remain a significant restriction.
Woods has also been dealing with ongoing health and rehabilitation issues. The golf star has not competed regularly since the 2024 British Open and remains one of the most accomplished players in the history of the sport, with 15 major championships and 82 PGA Tour victories.
For now, Woods’ latest legal chapter ends without jail time but with a lengthy suspension of his driving privileges.
