Taylor Swift is set to make MTV Video Music Awards history. The singer-songwriter will receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors at the 2026 MTV VMAs, recognizing her influence as a filmmaker and visual storyteller.

A New Honor for Swift’s Directing Work
CBS and MTV announced Sept. 21 that Swift will be the first recipient of the Artist Director Honors. The award was created to recognize musicians who have expanded the possibilities of music videos through their roles as directors and creative leaders.
Swift’s directing career began in 2020 with the video for “The Man,” which marked her solo directorial debut. That project earned her the Best Direction award at the MTV VMAs that year.
She expanded her filmmaking work with All Too Well: The Short Film in 2021. The project built a cinematic narrative around one of her best-known songs and later earned VMA awards for Video of the Year, Best Longform Video and Best Direction, along with a Grammy for Best Music Video.

“The Fate of Ophelia” is nominated for Video of the Year, Best Pop, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Choreography and Best Visual Effects. Swift is also nominated for Best Direction for “Opalite,” while The Life of a Showgirl is up for Best Album. Her other nominations include Song of Summer for “I Knew It, I Knew You” and Artist of the Year.
When to Watch the 2026 VMAs
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. ET. Viewers can watch on CBS and MTV, with streaming available through Paramount+ in the United States.
Snoop Dogg is scheduled to host the event. Madonna leads this year’s nominees with 13 nominations, while Nirvana will receive the Video Vanguard Award. Performers are expected to include Madonna, Lisa, RAYE, Sienna Spiro, Shaboozey, GENER8ION, Gunna and Yung Lean.
